Tree Care & Municipal Permit FAQs

Municipal permit thresholds at a glance

Pickering

Private trees 30 cm DBH or greater on most residential lots

Pickering's Tree Protection By-law regulates the injury or destruction of protected private trees. Applications require a site plan and, for larger or contested trees, an arborist report. Replacement planting is typically required.

Ajax

Private trees generally 20 cm DBH or greater

The Town of Ajax private tree by-law protects mature trees on private property. Permit applications include tree location, species, DBH, and a stated reason for removal. Dead or hazardous trees may qualify for an expedited exemption with arborist documentation.

Whitby

Woodlands and larger private trees

Whitby enforces both Regional woodland conservation rules and municipal tree provisions. Lots inside protected woodland areas face stricter review, and an arborist report is normally required to justify removal.

Oshawa

Protected private trees and all city-owned trees

Oshawa regulates the destruction of protected trees and prohibits any work on boulevard or park trees without city authorization. Emergency removals must be documented with photos and an arborist assessment.

Port Perry

Regulated private trees, woodlands and all township trees

Scugog's tree by-law governs Port Perry, protecting regulated private trees, woodland areas and township-owned trees. Applications need species, DBH, a site plan and usually a replacement planting commitment.

A maple split over our garage at 11pm. The crew had the limb secured before midnight and the whole tree gone the next morning. Calm, insured, and no damage to the roof.

Two other companies said they'd need a crane on the street. These folks tracked a lift through the side gate on mats and left the lawn untouched. Genuinely impressive.

They measured the trunk, wrote the arborist report and dealt with the town for me. Permit approved in three weeks and the removal was booked the same week.
