Toronto's private tree provisions protect trees measuring 30 cm in diameter or greater at 1.4 m above grade, and every street tree regardless of size. Applications require a site plan, an arborist assessment for contested removals, a posted notice period, and replacement planting or cash-in-lieu. Work on a city-owned tree is arranged only through the municipality.
Ajax generally engages its private tree by-law from about 20 cm DBH, Pickering from about 30 cm. Both expect tree location, species, diameter and a stated reason for removal. Dead, dying or imminently hazardous trees may be handled as an exemption, but only with arborist documentation and photographs on file.
Scugog's tree by-law governs Port Perry and protects regulated private trees, woodlands and all township-owned trees, typically requiring a site plan, species and DBH details and a replacement planting commitment. Whitby layers regional woodland conservation rules over municipal provisions, so woodland-designated lots need a full arborist justification.
